DEPARTMENT:

Be Our Valentine

There’s been a changing of the editorial guard at Generations Hawaii and I’d like to introduce myself, the new editor. Before doing so, however, all of us at GH would like to thank former editor Dianne Glei for her hard work and great achievements. Dianne took over the magazine at a critical moment and built it up to the point where, like an adult child, it is ready to go out into the world on its own. Dianne is moving on to ‘pastures green and meadows fresh,’ and all of us here wish her the greatest happiness and success.

Among the reasons for the change is GH’s remarkable acceptance among a growing band of loyal readers. The current issue headlines them, or more accurately you, the individual reading this right now. More than likely you are female, over 50, still active physically and professionally, reasonably affluent, college-educated, probably have grandchildren, a home and a nice car. You eat out quite a bit and love to read. For more, see our Reader Analysis on pages 6-7.

Our Valentine’s issue also introduces a number of new departments which we hope you’ll enjoy. You are certainly invited to respond and comment. The new feature I enjoy most is called Adventures of a Middle-Aged Editor. That’s me, of course, and let’s just say that the descriptor ‘middle-aged’ is generously applied. Since taking over as editor I’ve resolved to take on those many things, great and small, I’ve always meant to try but somehow never got around to doing. Life, you know, or perhaps (more honestly) my chicken-livered cowardice. So I plan to go parasailing, perhaps jump out of an airplane with a skydiving instructor holding me tight (very tight), take surfing lessons or even wander around Waikiki at 3 AM.

My first adventure—we don’t want to rush into these things, now do we?—was to descend to the bottom of the sea in the Atlantis submarine off Diamond Head. I’ve secretly always wanted to do that, never did, now I have. See my heart-pounding report, page 8.

Next month I plan to go to Las Vegas to watch my friends Annette and Steve get married in the Gracelands Chapel by an Elvis impersonator. Apparently he sings ‘Love Me Tender’ as the rings are slipped on. I’m sure there’ll be lots of jokes too about not stepping on the groom’s blue suede shoes, sly allusions to the jailhouse rock he’s headed into, and cries of you ain’t nuthin’ but a hound dawg, etc. Hey, they chose to get married there, like that. God bless them both.

Also in this issue you’ll see many of our usual offerings, some retitled. ‘Money Matters’ is now Dollars and Sense, and our Health column has been travolted into Stayin Alive. A regular feature by Reeve Weiner, GH’s Associate Publisher, is called The Back Door. You’ll find it, predictably, at the end of the book. It’s a Q-and-A interview with an intriguing Hawaii citizen at least 50 years old. Reeve’s first interviewee is Carlos Delgado, who heads up California Pizza Kitchen’s Hawaii operation.

Finally, of course, we invite you to enjoy the profile of the lovely Leslie Wilcox, former TV news anchorwoman and now CEO of PBS, our cover story.

Welcome to the new Generations Hawaii and our Valentine’s Issue! Don’t hesitate to let us know what you think of it. And a happy Valentine’s Day to you.
