When “The King” Came To Town

The year was 1957 and hip, handsome Elvis Presley was dominating the American music scene. An excerpt from a brand-new book by legendary promoter and radio personality Tom Moffatt recalls the king of rock-and-roll’s first concerts in Hawaii.

It’s amazing how a half century just whizzes by! When KGMB-TV launched “The Kini Popo Show” in 1954, I had no idea the same keiki (children) watching my sidekick “Peaches” the chimp stealing Coke from my glass would be part of the “audience” for a brand-new media event 52 years later.

Peaches, of course, is gone, and Coke has slipped to number two. But it’s delightful that you and I are still here. To those who remember those early days, welcome back. The fun is about to begin again!

Welcome to Generations Hawaii: The Good Life After 50, a new bimonthly magazine for readers aged 50 and better! Its title refers to the ohana (family) that extends from this half-century mark — from grandchildren and college-aged kids to adult children and parents in their golden years.

Each issue will be chock-full of stories, news and tips aimed at a mature readership who’s fully enjoying life in Hawaii.

Our Company. Founded in 1954, Trade Publishing is Hawaii’s leading provider of publications serving the construction, hotel, property management and retail food industries. Generations Hawaii is our second consumer magazine (the other, Pacific Paddler, was launched in 1996 with my son Ropati as publisher).

Our Team. Associate Publisher Faith Freitas holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has been a member of Trade’s advertising sales staff since 1993.

Prior to joining Trade last year, Circulation and Advertising Sales Manager Ilan Amir was a top sales representative for the Sultan Company, one of the largest jewelry manufacturers and retailers in the United States. He brings a lot of enthusiasm and dedication to the table.

In 2002, Art Director Susan Whitney moved to “paradise” from Dallas, Texas, where she had worked as a graphic designer and art director for the American Heart Association National Center In-House Design Studio for almost 20 years. She recharges her creative batteries by reading, swimming and relaxing at the beach.

Editor Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, an award-winning travel journalist, has charted a career in Hawaii that spans nearly 30 years. This beat is new to her, but as you’ll read in the essay of the same name in this issue, she understands and is personally experiencing the joys and challenges of Life After 50.

Our Vision. We hope Generations Hawaii will inform, instruct, motivate and entertain you. It will be an enlightening, exciting journey, and we’re looking forward to having you there with us.

Aloha,

Carl “Kini Popo” Hebenstreit

There are about 20 Oahu magazines on the market today, running the gamut in subject matter — from sports and fashion to travel and parenting. Generations Hawaii joins that diverse group, offering editorial content of interest to readers living “the good life after 50.”

Cover stories will feature notable Oahu residents in this age bracket who’ve made significant contributions to the community. A local radio and show business icon since the 1950s, Tom Moffatt, our first “cover boy,” certainly fits the bill. We share a great excerpt from his recently released book, The Showman of the Pacific: 50 Years of Radio and Rock Stars, along with an insightful glimpse of his personal life.

In addition, each issue will include a profile of a senior who

has excelled in a sport, hobby or artistic endeavor; a roundup of health and self-improvement classes; newsy items about services, activities and special events; and synopses of hot book releases obtained through a partnership with Borders.

Regular columns written by experts in the fields will discuss health, finance, technology, topics revolving around the home and current issues of concern to seniors. As the magazine grows in size, we also will be covering dining, travel and entertainment.

We hope you enjoy reading Generations Hawaii and find it to be a valuable resource. Your feedback is important; please e-mail your comments and suggestions to me at cheryl@tradepublishing.com. My door and ears are always open.

Aloha,

Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi
