Sizzling Like a Steak
“Food,
glorious food, our favorite diet!” So sang Oliver Twist and
his friends in Lionel Bart’s popular 1960s musical, !
This issue of GH is devoted almost entirely to that glorious topic, of interest to everyone. You could say that food is the issue and the issue is food—at the very least, for thought.
Up front and center is Lynn Cook’s scintillating interview with master-chef Alan Wong, whose restaurant always ranks among the top establishments in Honolulu. We were there for his cover photo shoot on St Valentine’s Day and were impressed to learn that in some cases diners had made their reservations almost a year in advance! Now that’s what you call popular.
Also in this issue is my unforgettable dinner cruise on Atlantis’s Navatek I —see . Since I traveled alone—you’ll find out why—I was able to observe my fellow diners and found myself unwittingly drawn into two moving soap operas: that of the young Japanese couple who sat behind me and the even more engrossing story involving a memorable squabble at the table ahead. But don’t judge the outcome until you get there!
Also for your culinary delectation is an amusing and informative feature by Lauren Conching, our favorite food-and-restaurant guru. Lauren often writes for GH’s sister publication, , but we lured her over this once to tackle the delightful quandary of dining out while on a diet. What to do when temptation is on all sides and your friends are encouraging you to break loose? Where’s the fun of being squired to Alan Wong’s (or Zippy’s, or The Willows, or Cinnamon’s or Auntie Pasto’s) if you have to Just Say No? And keep saying it, all the way through to the dessert? Follow Lauren’s advice and you’ll come away both happy and replete.
Still on the topic of food, check out GH Associate Publisher Reeve Weiner’s popular column, this month all about the humble but delectable blueberry.
And see also our review of one of the best food-and-party books to come out in recent months, Kaui Philpot’s If you’ve never attended a Super Luau, or even know what one is, you’ll find out.
Capping everything are two spectacular photo shoots, the first at Don Ho’s Island Grill where Haumea Hebenstreit Ho launched her late husband’s book, : . You’ll also meet Edwina and Miles Nishimoto, the big winners in GH’s reader-survey contest. They’re off to The Willows at our expense—more about their adventure in the next issue
All this and our usual features await you in , Honolulu’s hottest
new magazine. We’re so hot we sizzle like steaks at sunset.
