In the future, we plan to publish an updated and revised list of restaurants that offer senior discounts. Check the February-March issue for the original list. For now, there are five more to add to the list (for those keeping track) in addition to the ones I mentioned in this column last month.
The first two are Dairy Queen/Orange Julius at Ala Moana Center (1450 Ala Moana Blvd., #1075; phone: 946-6693) and Ward Warehouse (1050 Ala Moana Blvd., #1326; phone: 593-2241). At Ward, customers age 65 and older receive 10 percent off, while at Ala Moana, customers 62-plus get a 10 percent discount.
Third and fourth are the Hawaii Prince Hotel's Prince Court and Hakone restaurants. At the Prince Court, customers age 50 and older receive a discounted rate on the breakfast ($15.50), lunch ($18.50) and dinner ($31) buffets Mondays through Thursdays. This special is valid until Sept. 30. At Hakone, patrons 50 and older receive $10 off the sushi and appetizer bar on Wednesdays and Thursdays. That discount is valid until Aug. 31. The Hawaii Prince is located at 100 Holomoana St.; phone: 944-4494.
Fifth is the Oceanarium Restaurant at the Pacific Beach Hotel. The Oceanarium offers senior (65 and up) lunch buffets on Thursdays and Fridays for $10.50 per person. Mondays through Thursdays, its breakfast buffet is discounted to $9.75, and the Saturday brunch is $14.50 for seniors. Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the restaurant offers a two-for-one deal for its early-bird senior diners from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Pacific Beach Hotel is located at 2490 Kalakaua Ave.; phone 921-6111.
If you know of any other restaurants offering senior discounts, please let me know.
In other news, the business reply cards we included in the last issue are pouring in right now. We'll announce the results soon, but it looks like the two top Generations media personalities are Leslie Wilcox and Perry & Price.
Here are a few of the comments we have received on the cards, in response to the statement, "I read Generations Hawaii because ..."
Lorraine Kato of Pearl City: "It's an encyclopedia for the seniors. We’re fortunate to have a magazine like Generations Hawaii.”
Wendell Hosea of Honolulu: "It is exciting to read and relevant to everyone, not only Hawaii's graying population!"
Linda Shimamoto of Kaneohe: "I like the variety - health, aging, relationships, food and people."
Evelyn Yoshioka of Kaneohe: "You feel the heartbeat and need of the senior generation - with pertinent news, how-tos, etc. - in such a readable package."
Thanks to everyone who took the time to fill out the card and stick it in the mail. We really appreciate your feedback.
Mahalo,
Letter to the Editor
Dear Elaine,
I’m 89 years young, old generation, a long-time regular reader. Great interesting issue, and I am looking forward to the July edition.
So many people I know pictured, and I enjoyed traveling down memory lane with the articles.
Keep up the wonderful work writing.
Aloha,
Manny Russo
Editor's note: Mahalo Manny, and I hope you enjoy this July issue.
